On any given day, there are places that our heart’s desires can be found. Whether that be in contentment, selfishness, gratitude, anger, loyalty, and the list can go on…
We are human. NO JUDGEMENT HERE, I promise.

Take one woman for example, Abigail. Her story is translated in the Biblical book of 1 Samuel 25. Her marriage love story to a man named Nabal is a tumultuous one as her husband’s reputation is that of ignorance, pride, and reckless ambition.
Nabal is described in 1 Samuel 25 as selfishly shunning the future King David:
10 “Who is this fellow David?” Nabal sneered to the young men. “Who does this son of Jesse think he is? There are lots of servants these days who run away from their masters. 11 Should I take my bread and my water and my meat that I’ve slaughtered for my shearers and give it to a band of outlaws who come from who knows where?”
Nabal’s spouse, Abigail, could do two things: (1) go along with his ignorance and disrespect toward David or (2) be found (rooted) in the righteousness of God.
Praise the Lord, Abigail chose to be FOUND! This wasn’t necessarily easy. Going with the status quo and maintaining her positioning in the family business could have been very tempting.
But David was God’s CHOSEN king and righteous decision. Abigail knew better. Her heart’s desire was for what was rooted in wisdom. So Abigail chose to do what was BEST! She fed David and his starving troops.
1 Samuel 25 reads:
18 Abigail wasted no time. She quickly gathered 200 loaves of bread, two wineskins full of wine, five sheep that had been slaughtered, nearly a bushel of roasted grain, 100 clusters of raisins, and 200 fig cakes. She packed them on donkeys 19 and said to her servants, “Go on ahead. I will follow you shortly.” But she didn’t tell her husband Nabal what she was doing.
Abigail could be trusted to pray... Trusted to weigh the wrongs with the rights… Trusted to act accordingly…
And David noticed.
1 Samuel 25 reads:
32 David replied to Abigail, “Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you to meet me today! 33 Thank God for your good sense! Bless you for keeping me from murder and from carrying out vengeance with my own hands. 34 For I swear by the Lord, the God of Israel, who has kept me from hurting you, that if you had not hurried out to meet me, not one of Nabal’s men would still be alive tomorrow morning.” 35 Then David accepted her present and told her, “Return home in peace. I have heard what you said. We will not kill your husband.”
And God notices us too… Our heart’s desires for properly addressing injustice… Our heart’s desires to flee from temptation… Our heart’s desires to love our families well… Our heart’s desire to better our communities.
God notices…
May we remain faithful to the Lord — even in the difficult places. May we be found in Him (the Lord) — even as we face the temptation to “go along to get along.”
Because there is truly no other place that is better than the presence of God…
With love always,
—Keturah
