This is not a culturally insensitive blog post magnifying ignorance and a lack of regard for the rich history of Mexican people. I simply can’t help but ponder the meaning behind today — Cinco De Mayo.
There will be lots of celebrations. Parties. Bar hopping. Plenty of Taco Tuesday restaurant specials and in-home gatherings. Yes, it’s estimated that over 150 million people in the United States celebrate May 5th in this manner every year.
I even have my own taco ingredients on deck and am ready to roll.

Still, there’s more to the story than a few celebratory gestures and some tacos at the dinner table…
What truly drops my jaw as I revisit Mexican history for my own personal knowledge and for answering the questions of my inquisitive, home-schooled daughter, is the way in which one small Mexican army compares to one huge French army.
The numbers just don’t add up…
At the battle of May 5, 1862, Mexico’s army only boasted about 2,000 to 2,500 ill-equipped soldiers. On the contrary, France’s army represented 6,000 highly trained and prepared men who were ready for the task of war.
The results were astounding…
Let’s just say Mexico (clearly the underdog in the situation) slaughtered France in a fight that seemed fixed and predictably in favor of the bigger army.
I thought of Biblical Scripture…
God used “seemingly” weak and small people, armies, and situations all the time. In fact it was the only way that Gideon, an unlikely Israelite leader, could proceed forward with a small and puny army to victory.
Judges 7 says:
The Lord told Gideon, “You have too many soldiers with you for me to drop Midian into their hands, because Israel would become arrogant and say, ‘It was my own abilities that delivered me.’ (verse 2)
Then the Lord told Gideon, “I’m going to deliver you with the 300 soldiers who lapped by giving the Midianites into your control. Send everyone else back to their own homes.” (verse 7)
Literally tens of thousands of soldiers were told to exit the scene. And yes, that little army defeated the bigger, opposing army with God’s strength and strategy as their weaponry.
I thought about the person with “little” resources to accomplish an important task. The family “stretching” what they have to literally live. The dedicated leader that doesn’t boast a huge team and platform. God can use your little. In fact, He wants to.
HONEST REFLECTION: Consider the one “little thing” in your life that you sense the Lord wants to use mightily and for His Glory. It’s probably that thing you undermine, devalue, ignore, or “push out of the way” for whatever reason. No judgement here! I’ve got my own reflecting to do too! LOL. ❤️
Declare this scripture (if you feel led) as a stance of faith and overall belief that you can offer the Lord your “little” — no matter the outcome:
Jeremiah 32:17
“Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.”
With kindness – Keturah
